What Is a Dental Bridge?
Dental bridges are replacements for missing teeth. When you lose a tooth, your remaining teeth can shift out of position, causing you to develop a bad bite and making it more difficult for you to chew and speak normally. A dental bridge will literally “bridge” the gap in your smile to keep your teeth in the correct position, maintain a healthy bite, and give you back a beautiful smile.
Types of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are typically anchored in place by crowns attached to the teeth on either side of the prosthetic tooth (called the abutment teeth), but they may also be supported by dental implants. Both options have their pros and cons. When you visit us for a tooth replacement consultation, we will help you consider all your options and recommend the one that we believe best fits your unique situation.
Traditional Bridge

A traditional bridge is typically used to replace 1 – 3 missing teeth in a row. It has a crown on each end, which get attached to the abutment teeth. Then, artificial teeth called pontics fill the empty space. It usually takes just a few appointments to design and place a dental bridge. This option is long-lasting and relatively affordable as well. The biggest downside is that the abutment teeth need to be significantly modified in order to support their crowns.
Implant Bridge

An implant bridge is not supported by the natural teeth. Rather, it gains all its strength from prosthetic tooth roots, called dental implants, that get surgically placed beneath the gumline. Although this requires a lengthier treatment process, it can provide an incredibly strong bite. Plus, there is usually no need to modify any nearby teeth.
The Benefits of Dental Bridges

When you receive a dental bridge, you can expect to enjoy multiple benefits:
- No dental drift. A bridge can serve as a placeholder that prevents your remaining natural teeth from drifting out of place and interfering with your bite.
- Reliable function. Bridges are strong enough to bear some of the pressure of chewing, so they can reduce wear and tear on your natural teeth.
- Beautiful appearance. Bridges can look very similar to natural teeth.
- With proper care, a dental bridge may last for a decade or longer.
